Becoming a Christian is like a race that requires only one step.  The difficulty many people have is even getting to the starting line.  There are three (3) basic truths we need to understand to prepare us before we ask Christ to be our Savior.

  1. Understand “right” and “wrong”. – Contrary to what some cultures and societies promote, there is right and there is wrong.  People have a difficult time with this point because no one “likes” being wrong, yet, deep down within ourselves, we know when we have done wrong.
  2. Consequences for our actions. – Here is another point that some portions of society have tried to eliminate, but the simple fact of the matter is, our actions HAVE consequences.
  3. We ARE mortal. – One day, unless Christ returns first, each and every person now living, will someday die.  There’s an old saying that says, “The only two sure things in life are death and taxes.”  Now, there’s a lot of loopholes in tax law, but you can’t cheat death.
These three basic concepts allow us to understand our position in relationship to God and see our inevitable destination.  There is right and wrong, these actions have consequences and one day we will die.

Now, here are four verses in the Bible, all found in the Book of Romans in the New Testament of the Bible.  These scriptures are sometimes called “The Roman Road to Salvation” because they lead us, point by point to understand and accept Jesus Christ as our Savior.

  1. The first verse is Romans, Chapter 3, verse 23, which reads “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  Now this verse lets us know that there is NO ONE who is without sin.  Sin, simply put, is doing wrong toward God.  Doing what we’re not supposed to, or not doing what we are supposed to do.  Sin is not measured in degree or graded on a curve.  A “little white lie” is just as much a sin as murder; all sin is sin.  Furthermore, all of us have sinned in our life.  We know we have.
  2. The second verse is Romans, Chapter 6, verse 23, which reads, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Here, the consequences of sin are defined.  The fine or penalty for sin, is death.  Not just physical death, but this refers to eternal death.  Which means, those who have sinned (EVERYONE) deserves and is destined to eternal death (Hell) because of our sin.  But wait! It continues and tells us that God LOVES us and made a way for us to not have to pay the fine.  Now, the fine IS going to be paid.  The difference is, who’s paying that price.  It says God GIVES US, FREELY, eternal life, IN (through, by) Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ, Holy and sinless, died for our sins, paying our sin debt with His Holy blood.
  3. Now why would God have Jesus die for us?  The third step tells us in Romans, Chapter 5, verse 8, which reads, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  God doesn’t just SAY He loves us, God demonstrates (shows) He loves us.  God desires that everyone be saved from hell (1 Timothy 2:3-4, Titus 2:11).  So, even though we are sinners, Christ died for us, in our place, to pay our sin debt.
  4. Those three verses get us to the beginning of the starting line.  In Romans, Chapter 9, verses 9 and 10, we read, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”  There it is!  The steps that it takes to become a Christian.  It’s not living a “good life”.  No one can live a life good enough to pay for our sins, no one.  It’s not about wealth, or knowledge, or fame.  It’s simply believing in who Jesus Christ is and what He did and then confessing (saying, telling others) that you believe.  At that moment, the promise given here is that IF we earnestly and honestly do this, YOU WILL BE SAVED.  It’s that simple.

Believe in your heart and Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord.

Now, if this is the first time you’ve ever read those verses and you’ve realized that you need and want Jesus Christ to pay your sin debt, and accept Him as your savior, take a moment to pray a short, simple prayer, from your heart, telling God that you believe and accept, and thank Him for making a way, thank Jesus Christ for taking your place.

That’s all it takes to begin your new life with Christ (born again).  It’s so simple that a child can understand and follow.  It will turn your life around, but He (Jesus Christ) will help you and lead you in your life.  The Book of John, chapter 14, verse 6, tells us, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me’.”  Jesus is the way to eternal life (heaven) with God.  Jesus said He is the only way.  I pray that when you read these words, your heart, your inner most being will recognize the absolute truth of these words and that you will Believe and you will Confess and you will Accept the free gift of God, which is eternal life, through Christ Jesus.

This very well could be the most important thing you ever read!
